Highlights from the first Annual “Sugar on Snowsville”
On Saturday, March 21, 2026, the Snowsville Community Trust hosted a celebration of the Vermont tradition of “sugar on snow”. This sugaring season delight involves heating maple syrup beyond the syrup stage to a thickened consistency. The hot syrup is then poured over fresh snow, causing it to cool quickly and take on candy form. Donuts and pickles are traditional accompaniments.
The event was set in front of Snowsville’s Fan House and featured free sugar on snow, served in a custom-made wood trough from Snowsville Woodworks, donuts from Sugarville Bakery in Waitfield, pickles, coffee, and apple cider. The Randolph Sunrise Rotary Club organized a raffle for a wool blanket made from Shetland wool from sheep raised by Linda Doane in Braintree. Snow from the night before made for perfect snowman making.
Thanks to a great volunteer effort led by Keith and Betina Gallant, and with organizational support from the Vermont Council on Rural Development, the event was a great success, and the Trust looks forward to planning the second annual “Sugar on Snowsville” next year.
